Eugene O'Brien - The Tempest - Acrylic on board
Eugene O'Brien was born in Cashel, Co Tipperary and completed a BA Degree in UCC. He now lives in Dublin. He is a self-taught artist who works mainly in oil and pastel. In 2002 he contributed two paintings to a group exhibition held in the Department of Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht and contributed the painting, 'The Tempest' to the 'Diverse Works' calendar in unison with PwDI. In 2003 he held his first solo exhibition in the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre.
"My paintings are loosely based on people I have known and are painted on panel boards. I try to express my emotions of the people concerned when I paint and try to be as expressive as possible. These were painted in the Arts and Crafts Unit of St Brendan's Psychiatric Hospital in 2002. They are either based on patients or based on the way I was feeling at the time. I use art as a therapy to combat depression."
