PwDI CALLS FOR INDEPENDENT AUDIT OF GOVERNMENT SPENDING ON DISABILITY

PwDI has called for an independent audit of all Government spending on disability to be carried out by the Comptroller and Auditor General.
Michael Ringrose, CEO of PwDI said:
“The bulk of the additional funding of €1.3 billion to be spent between 2005 and 2009 will be absorbed by service providers. It is imperative that the extra resources are properly targeted to ensure they make a real impact on the daily lives of the 400,000 people with disabilities in Ireland. If we are to achieve that it means that service providers must not use the extra resources to provide for themselves before they provide for their clients - people with disabilities. Funding must be delivered to agreed national standards as proposed by the National Disability Authority.”
Mr Ringrose continued:
“It is also critical that there would be a clearly identified authority with overall responsibility for ensuring co-ordination and delivery of services that can meet those standards and that there is clear accountability.”
“Every Government department has some part to play in the funding of disability. Currently it is done in an uncoordinated manner and data on spending is not collated in a systematic way. This results in gross inefficiencies and best benefit is not achieved.”
