PwDI has welcomed the tabling by the European Commission recently of a regulation that will prohibit discrimination against air passengers with disabilities.
Chief Executive Mr Michael Ringrose said:
"Through our representation on the European Disability Forum (EDF) we have been working for some time to outlaw discriminating practices by airlines. It is now just around the corner. Within months people with disabilities should, for the first time, be free to travel on an equal basis with others."
The Regulation on the rights of passengers with reduced mobility when travelling by air proposes to:
. Prohibit refusal of booking or refusal of carriage to disabled persons because of their disability
. Prohibit direct charging for assistance
. Ensure the provision of high and comparable levels of assistance to meet the needs of people with disabilities
. Ensure that quality standards are set by airport managing bodies in conjunction with airport users committees
. Establish a centralised charging system whereby the managing body of an airport will provide assistance free of charge to people with disabilities
. Oblige airlines to pay into the centralised system an amount proportionate to the number of passengers they carry (all passengers)
Outline mechanisms for complaints, sanctions and enforcement.
