People with Disabilities Celebrate National Heritage Week

The Louth PwDI Network participated in Heritage Week 2006 as a way of claiming for and encouraging people with disabilities in County Louth to enjoy the county’s rich heritage and legends.

The Access Tour of heritage sites took place on Sunday 27th August 2006 and had as its starting point the PwDI Offices in Dundalk. Each member who took part in the tour had an information pack with information from the Heritage Council and Fáilte Ireland and writing material to note their experiences. Hired for the tour was a disability accessible mini-bus, an essential part of any outing involving disabled passengers. The tour route was laid out as: The Long Woman’s Grave, King John’s Castle in Carlingford and other sites, Proleek Dolmen, Roche Castle, Cuchulain Stone, Ardee sites and Kildemock Church, Monasterboice and finally, Mellifont Abbey. Dundalk and Drogheda sites, due to time constraints, would have to wait until a further date.

The feedback from those who took part was a collective “When are we going to do something similar again?”

Malachy Foots PRO of the Network says:

“People with disabilities are proud of Louth’s rich heritage. We look forward to playing an inclusive role in seeing access improved so as more people with disabilities can begin to enjoy it.”

Clearly it is but the beginning.
