A campaign highlighting illegal and inconsiderate parking was launched on 29th November by the Traffic Section of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.
The campaign is designed to raise motorists’ awareness of the obstructions that are caused by stopping or parking vehicles on footpaths, disabled parking bays (without a permit) and on cycle tracks.
Such inconsiderate behaviour towards people with disabilities, pedestrians and cyclists alike is illegal and can result in a fine. A driver in violation of these road traffic regulations was recently fined €100 in court after appeal and was banned from driving for one month.
An information leaflet focussing on this matter is being circulated in support of International Day of People with Disabilities on 3 December.
The campaign’s aim is to highlight these issues and to emphasise the illegal and obstructive nature of such parking.
The Council have consulted with An Garda Siochana who will enforce this matter more strictly.
The launch was attended by PwDI Member John Nolan, PwDI staff member Stephen MacWhite and facilitated by Pat Coffey, Equality and Disability Liaison Officer with the Council.
It is ironic that John, his guide dog, and Stephen were nearly run over by three motorists who jumped a red light at the crossing by the DART station. Stephen stopped the last motorist who was about to run several other people over and she is likely to remember the person who said “STOP”.
