PwDI has now completed a series of six Capacity Building Programmes aimed at Network Officers and members. The programme outlined in detail the role of elected officers and of individual members.
The open meeting sessions provided very useful information on what individuals believe to be critical issues of concern for the year ahead.
Below is a summary of the ideas put forward by the delegates at the Capacity Building Programme held in the Clarion Hotel, Dublin on Saturday, January Suggested ideas for the Networks for 2006
1. It was suggested that a survey be carried out to determine the number of people that have a disability (one is planned in the next CSO Census). But in order to do this it was felt that we have to define disability as there is no one clear Irish definition.
2. It was suggested that all networks should put pressure on the Citizens Information centres to provide information on all disabilities.
3. An aggressive marketing approach needs to be undertaken to convey the ethos of PwDI.
4. Small groups acting on behalf of people with disabilities should be brought into the PwDI umbrella.
5. It was felt that people in rural locations were being neglected in relation to housing. Local authorities should be lobbied as single people are the biggest majority on housing waiting lists, many of whom have a disability.
6. PwDI should encourage all networks to participate in the upcoming St Patrick's Day Parade as it would provide a lot of publicity and help get PwDI's message across.
7. PwDI should provide a free phone number for people who wish to contact them.
