90 of the world’s tallest ships arrived in Waterford in early July before heading off down the Suir for a race off Hook Head. One of the ships was unique in that it was crewed by people with disabilities, The Tenacious.
28 new and temporary crew for the voyage from Southampton to Waterford.
Wheechair-user Lisa Reding from West Yorkshire:
“It’s something I always wanted to do. To see how far I could go.”
The Jubilee Sailing Trust, based in Southampton, has two ships, the Lord Nelson and the Tenacious. Both carry a crew of 40, including a professional crew of 10. They have many special features which allow anyone with a disability to play a full part in the ship’s operation. The JST is funded by charitable donations.
People with disabilities took as much a part in the running of the ship as able-bodied guests. Everybody helped hoist the sails and with the aid of special harnesses, were able to climb the masts.
Everybody took turns in helping in the kitchen, in keeping watch and in steering the ship.
A six day trip cost €800 and everything is provided. However, you are likely to get stuck peeling potatoes!
Those interested in sailing on the Tenacious or the Lord Nelson should contact the Jubilee Sailing Trust in Southampton
