A delegation of 18 people from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Germany recently visited Ireland as part of a study trip to view services and the social situation for hearing-impaired people in Ireland. All participants either have a hearing impairment or are involved in the delivery of services to those who have.
Part of Socrates, Grundvig2 study programme, the group was hosted over six days by PwDI Board Director and now national Chairperson, James McClean. They had a series of meetings with senior personnel of the HSE North West, Councillors, PwDI national office, the National Association for Deaf People, The Irish Deaf Society and Deafcom.
Good business was matched with a lively and very successful social programme, according to James. The group also got the opportunity to meet with colleagues from their home countries, some visually impaired, who are successfully working in Ireland. The group expressed a desire to return to Ireland, where many firm friendships were forged.
If you would like contact details for the Deaf Associations in the participating member states for this project, please contact James McClean on 086-3445075 or by email to jimdonegal@eircom.net
