FIMITIC, the International Federation of Persons with a Physical Disability, the Presidency of which is held by Irish representative, Nigel Brander of PwDI, had its most recent meeting in Budapest on April 7th last. Central to the discussion was the need for appropriate medical services, accessible to the entire population, in all countries.
It was stressed that new medical insights and methods of treatment must not be reserved for the industrialised nations, due to the commercial or economic interests of the pharmaceutical industry. Rather, they must be distributed worldwide and offered to everyone at affordable prices and in accessible environments. It was agreed that more direct investment, training and support of health workers are all needed.
FIMITIC believes that decisions about allocation should be disclosed where the availability of the top medical products and treatments hit economic limits. Implicit restrictions on medical services must be rejected as they undermine fairness and equality of opportunity to health systems.
