The EYPD 2003 Tour Bus visited Sligo on July 8 and although it poured rain for the entire morning, we had a very good attendance. There was a wonderful atmosphere and, believe it or not, I think the rain amused people being so typical of our climate here in the north-west! It hadn't rained for three weeks until our Big Day! Thankfully, the owners of the Adelaide Bar and Coffee Shop came to our rescue offering their floor space for organisations to set up their stands and displays. They also supplied endless cups of tea and coffee.
We had representation of disability organisations in Sligo and Leitrim, from Brainwave, from the National Council for the Blind, from the North-Western Health Board and from FÁS. The Sligo and Leitrim branches of the Irish Wheelchair Association turned out by the busload!
Our local radio station, North-West Radio, set up their Outside Broadcast Unit for the morning beside the bus which was terrific. Not alone did they provide the music but the devoted the entire Tommy Marron Morning Show to us. They interviewed PwDI Chairman Nigel Brander and myself among others, each with his or her own outlook on their own disability. They received a great response to this and the topics raised were continued on the following morning.
All that's left for me now is to thank everybody who helped me organise the visit, both those in National Office and those in my own Sligo Network, NWR and the Coffee Shop. And a huge, "Thank You" to Sergeant Padraig Scanlan and Sergeant Enda Moore in Sligo Garda Station. If I have forgotten anybody, please accept my apologies and many thanks. Here's hoping that everybody enjoyed their day as much as we did in Sligo even if it was a tad damp!
