PwDI is set to publish a new report 'Advocacy in Ireland: Feedback from five Regional Workshops'. This report will inform the policy agenda and influence the future shape of advocacy services in Ireland.
According to the report's researcher and author, Frances Fitzgerald B. SocSc. MSc, a former social worker and Dáil deputy, "Advocacy is an exciting new area that is developing in Ireland. It has a lot of potential to really empower people with disabilities. There will be opportunities for activists and members of PwDI to learn more about advocacy, to be more powerful advocates, to help others better understand the potential of advocacy and to be sure that training, information and education about advocacy is available on the ground to everyone who needs it."
The strength underpinning this new report lies in the fact that it represents the views of people with disabilities throughout the country, hundreds of people who attended the special seminars. They expressed their concerns and gave their views on the development of an advocacy service. The views of local service providers were also taken on board.
The report marks an important further step along to road to implementing an independent advocacy service. It places PwDI in the position of having laid solid foundations for such a service (see pages 4 - 12)
