People with Disabilities in Ireland (PwDI), the national organisation representing all people with disabilities in Ireland, today called for "reasonable accommodation" to be shown by all concert promoters in relation to people with disabilities who need the assistance of personal assistants in order to attend concerts and other events.
Following claims that MCD promoters are offering no concession tickets for personal assistants to people with disabilities wishing to attend the Madonna concert at Slane this weekend, Michael Ringrose, CEO of PwDI said:
"Many people with disabilities would simply not be able to attend concerts or other events without the support of a personal assistance. In addition to the issue of facilitating equal participation in society, survey after survey has shown that disability costs people financially and, as a result, people with disabilities tend to be less well off.
"We are asking that people with disabilities be shown reasonable accommodation in relation to the issue of personal assistants. We are not necessarily seeking free tickets. However, having said that, there are many fine examples, such as the GAA and FAI, both of which offer full complimentary tickets to people with disabilities in respect of their personal assistants."
