People with Disabilities in Ireland (PwDI), the national organisation representing all people with disabilities today welcomed the planning guidelines on rural housing published today and, in particular, the provision to grant permission in cases where there are exceptional health circumstances.
Chief Executive of PwDI, Michael Ringrose said:
"This is a new departure and it is definitely a step in the right direction. It will give hope to people with disabilities and their families that tangible improvements will result from the Government's national disability strategy."
The Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government is one of six Government Departments that has a sectoral plan as part of the national disability strategy launched last September. Mr Ringrose said:
"Up to today that plan has been broad and aspirational. Today's announcement is the first real indication of something concrete for people with disabilities. They are now going to receive particular attention and they are going to be consulted in the process. That is progress and we welcome it," he said.
Mr Ringrose also said that he hoped that Minister Roche would give consideration to reopening cases where people with disabilities and/or their families may have recently been refused permission.
"There is a lot of catching up to be done as far as people with disabilities are concerned. We look forward to further improvements, in particular Part M of the national building regulations, which deals with access to buildings for people with disabilities," he said.
