PwDI (People with Disabilities in Ireland), the national body representing all people with disabilities today warmly welcomed the UN adoption of the International Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities
After 5 years of negotiations, the convention becomes the first Human Rights treaty of the 21st Century. The Convention, which covers rights to education, health, work and a raft of other protective measures for people with disabilities was first agreed to at the UN in New York on August 25th .
PwDI’s Chief Executive, Michael Ringrose, said
“This Treaty recognises the right of equality for people with disabilities. It is a major breakthrough for millions of people throughout the world who have been discriminated against for far too long. It will begin to impact on people’s lives over the next number of years.
“We urge countries to ratify this landmark treaty as quickly as possible.”
