STATEMENT ON OMBUDSMAN FOR CHILDREN DISABILITY CASE

Wednesday 24th January 2007.

Responding to the housing case involving a child with a disability highlighted today by the Ombudsman for Children, Ms Emily Logan, PwDI, (People with Disabilities in Ireland) the national organisation representing all people with disabilities has said, through its Chief Executive, Michael Ringrose:

“This case, unfortunately, comes as no surprise to us. The housing adaptation issue is fraught with problems.

“People with disabilities experience colossal and unnecessary delays between the identification of need and the actual delivery of the service.

“Others give up on the process because they cannot meet the outdated criteria.

“In the context of the €184 billion national development plan, so far it is merely a spending plan.

“PwDI awaits identification of the specific benefits and supports it will actually deliver.

“That will be the acid test as to whether or not it actually delivers real change in the daily lives of people with disabilities.”
